The Monolithic Rock

It lies in slumber. Its coat is a richly coloured ochre, smooth in most areas textured and worn in others.

Uluru  reigns over the wide expansive  landscape.  It’s over 348 metres high and 1.9 kms at its widest. It is of significant cultural importance being a sacred place to the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people.

We visited the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Cultural Centre. It provides a history and culture of the local Anangu people and their fight to gain custodianship of their land. This was a significant moment in the Lands Right Movement. The centre also describes how the  Anangu people survived, lived and cared for their land. The cost of diesel here is $2.03 a litre. Only one petrol station in town and the next closest is at Curtin Springs which is about 80ks away. The supermarket here also has the monopoly … a bottle of coke costs $7.00, yep no typo here, $7.00! Apples are $8.00 a kilo.
