Ningaloo Nyinggulu- Osprey Bay
Spent three and half weeks here and loved it. There were three days of constant high winds and strong gusts causing most of us camped here to take our awnings down. Better safe than sorry. I’ve seen how the wind can tear an awning apart.
Apart from those few days it was pure bliss. Calm, cool breeze in the morning and evening and warm to hot during the day. Blue skies and warm water with cool current flowing through.
Not a day went by when I didn’t see a whale or pod of whales heading south. On some days I could hear the whales calling and looking up they were breaching or slapping their tails.
Closer to shore Greenback Turtles were bobbing along, reef sharks were foraging and bait fish were flying over the water. It was extraordinary.
We snorkelled at Osprey and Oyster Stacks and it was wonderful to have schools of fish swim within an arms distance and watch turtles gliding past or hiding within the reef.
I got a bit of a fright when I happened upon the biggest ray I have ever seen lying burrowed in the sand, its eyes protruding, watching and waiting, its long tail sitting just above the sand. The following morning the ray passed me as I was fishing from the shoreline. It was well over 2 metres long.
