Corroboree Under the Stars

The traditional owners of the east Kimberley are the Miriwoong Gajerrong and before I continue I would like to pay my respects to all the Elders and thank them for welcoming us to their country.

Tonight we attended  Waringarri Corroboree Under the Stars. Waringarri means big mob, many people coming together and it was a fitting title for an amazing gathering of people from all over the world to view this amazing cultural event.

It was also an important event for the Miriwoong Gajerrong. Elders and children of all ages attended the event and most were involved in the performance. No pre recorded music; Elders told the stories, sang the songs and played the didgeridoo . The young men and women performed several traditional dances but the highlight was the last dance and clearly this was their favourite too!

The performances were raw yet genuine and this was confirmed when I overheard one local kid say to her mate ” I love this next dance”. We also ate a traditional meal that had been cooked in hot rocks and gum leaves. Delicious!

Clearly the Miriwoong Gajerrong  are a proud mob and it was evident that their culture is being passed on to the younger generations.
