Coen-The Bend (Northern) Campsite

This campsite is a cracker of a spot. It’s free and about 2 k’s north of Coen, a small town on the Cape York Peninsula. It’s bush camping by the Coen River and a terrific spot to spend a few days as you make your way up or on your return trip to The Tip. This camp area is very popular. We arrived before midday and got a spot on the river (road side), by 2 pm it was packed. There’s a drop toilet (a bit ordinary) and you can light a fire; bring your own firewood and there’s lots of shady spots.

You can get a caravan across the river, just pick your line to avoid the deep water and have someone spot for the trees as you enter the crossing. Here you’ll find a terrific croc free swimming hole that’s perfect for kids. The water is crystal clear and refreshing and there’s shady spots on the sandy bank.

Coen is a short drive away where you’ll find food, fuel, water and dump point.
