Tent, camper trailer, caravan or motorhome

This is a personal choice, depending on your budget and needs. Steve and I spent a long time debating this topic.  Over the years, we have tented, motorhomed and stayed in caravans and therefore had an idea of what to expect. There are pros and cons to each and whilst we initially considered buying a camper trailer, we finally settled on towing a small off road caravan.

Our decision to go with a caravan was influenced by the following

  • easy setup and pack up for overnight stays
  • sustainable and independent living
  • long term travel
  • creature comforts (internal bathroom a must)
  • more storage
  • protection from the elements
  • bush camping
  • more secure

We considered the increased cost of fuel when towing a van however we figured that we would be on the road for a long time and that some luxuries at our age were vital to making it work. We are not constrained by time which enables us to stay in places for long periods of time. The thought of long term travel in a tent didn’t appeal to us. We have however purchased  a tent so we can head off for short periods to remote places. Unhitch and away we go! We also liked the idea of pulling over somewhere, anywhere, boiling the kettle, opening the fridge and having a bite to eat with a minimum of effort whilst admiring the million dollar view.
