Cape York- The Road to Pajinka

For those who have travelled or intend to travel to the very northern tip of mainland Australia, the road to the top is the hot topic in conversations. One road there and back.

Whilst staying in Weipa I lost count of the number of cars, vans, camper trailers that were arriving on the back of recovery trucks. It was a stark reminder of the challenge ahead.

We drove to prevailing conditions, mindful that we were also towing our van. Some sections of the road were brutal, deep ruts which rattled my body, surprise dips, clouds of dust that left you blinded, dust holes, water crossings, washouts and potholes. The adrenalin was running high as we zig zagged across the road searching for the path of least resistance and often the best sections of the worst roads were the verges. And just when you can’t take it anymore, temporary relief comes with a small section of sealed road, only to be met with a sinking feeling when you first notice the red stained tar on the opposite side.

They say it’s all about the journey and not the destination. Along the way we met some wonderful people, swam in some amazing croc free waterholes and rivers and experienced the most amazing sunsets and sunrises. The red highway has left its mark and the hidden surprises of red dust reminds me of our journey to Cape York.
